SAN ANTONIO — A woman who was accused of hitting a 3-month-old puppy has been successfully indicted by the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office.
Havannah Dejonet Miller, 23, was indicted on February 10 for animal cruelty by torture, which is a felony.
In a video that has now been viewed by thousands of people across the United States, Miller can be seen striking her tiny toy poodle, Thanos, more than 15 times while the puppy cowered and cried.
“As a result of the concerned citizen who bravely came forward after recording the defendant’s actions to the hard work by officers and investigators of the San Antonio Police Department and the staff of Animal Care Services, our office was able to present this case to the Grand Jury in less than a month,” said Bexar County Criminal District Attorney Joe Gonzales. “The case is now pending in the 187th District Court where it will be placed on a trial docket. The offense of Felony Animal Cruelty constitutes a state jail offense with a punishment range of confinement in a state jail for any term of not more than two years or less than 180 days with a fine up to $10,000.”
The indictment alleges that her behavior constitutes felony animal cruelty by torture as defined under the Texas Penal Code.
“The District Attorney’s office appreciates the outpouring of communication and concern from citizens in our community and those around the country,” said Gonzales. “I want everyone to know that our office will not tolerate animal cruelty and will fight for justice against those who torture defenseless animals.”
