SAN ANTONIO — Bexar County has a new elections administrator for the first time in 20 years.
Officials said Wednesday that Michele Carew will succeed Jacque Callanen, who has served as the county’s elections head since 2005 and submitted her letter of resignation last June, saying she would continue to work until her replacement was found. According to a county press release, Carew’s hiring was finalized Thursday by a unanimous vote of the Bexar County Election Commission, chaired by County Judge Peter Sakai.
She will officially begin March 1.
“We emerged with a consensus that Ms. Carew would be the best person to lead Bexar County forward in this critically important position,” Sakai said in the release. “Her extensive experience overseeing more than 120 elections, her deep knowledge of election law and her commitment to impartiality made her the ideal candidate.”
Carew previously oversaw elections operations in Hood and Aransas counties, officials said, and served as president of the Texas Association of Elections Administrators from 2020-2021. Her hiring is the culmination of a search that saw more than 200 individuals applying for the position.
Of those, Carew and four other finalists were interviewed in person over the last two weeks.
This is a developing story.
