SAN ANTONIO — A man who was mistakenly released from jail, is now back behind bars, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials said 40-year-old inmate Gabriel Valverde was accidentally released from the county jail on Wednesday around 2:45 a.m. Valverde had been in jail since October 2025 for assault and obstruction or retaliation charges.
According to a press release, the assault charge was dropped, but Valverde still had a standing charge for obstruction or retaliation. Following a re-magistration on the standing charge, he was supposed to stay in jail without bond, however because of a mistake in the jail’s paperwork, he was released.
Officials said as soon as the jail realized the mistake, deputies began searching for Valverde. They checked the areas around the jail and other places he was known to frequent.
According to the press release, deputies saw Valverde around 8 a.m. near the corner of West Commerce and North Smith and took him back into custody without incident. He was safely returned to the Bexar County jail.
BCSO is investigating the incident and the Texas Commission on Jail Standards has also been notified.
