Bexar County jail inmate dies after alleged assault; death being investigated as homicide

On June 2, officials say 45-year-old inmate Tommy Lucero assaulted 48-year-old Robert Parker inside a cell. Parker died Thursday.

SAN ANTONIO — A Bexar County jail inmate is dead and officials are now investigating it as a homicide.

On Thursday afternoon, 48-year-old Robert Parker was pronounced dead after being removed from life support by decision of his family.

On June 2, officials say 45-year-old inmate Tommy Lucero assaulted Parker inside a cell. A nurse who was conducting follow medical checks saw Lucero assaulting Parker and told the unit officer. Lucero was eventually detained.

Parker was initially unresponsive and was taken to BAMC for emergency treatment where he was put on life support. He passed away 17 days later.

Officials say his manner of death is still pending and will ultimately be determined by the medical examiner. However, his death is currently be investigated as a homicide by the Texas Rangers. The cause of death is attributed to “injuries sustained during the assault.”

While the Texas Rangers conduct their criminal investigation, BCSO is conducting their own separate but concurrent administrative investigation.

Lucero, who was originally facing a burglary of building charge, now faces additional charges related to the assault.
