SAN ANTONIO — Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai announced he experienced a “minor medical issue” during the holiday season but said he will continue serving in the role during a short recovery period.
In a video posted online, Sakai said doctors have monitored an enlarged prostate for several years. During a recent checkup, his urologist identified an anomaly. Doctors ruled out cancer and performed a procedure at University Hospital that resolved Sakai’s symptoms.
“I want to thank the world-class doctors, nurses and health care professionals at University Hospital who took such great care of me,” Sakai said. He also thanked the support of his wife and family during this time.
Sakai said he will follow his doctors’ advice and take a short recovery period but will continue serving as Bexar County judge while working from home.
“Our county team remains fully engaged and continues doing the work the people of Bexar County expect and deserve,” he said.
Sakai also encouraged men, particularly those over 50, to prioritize prostate screenings.
“Preventive care works,” he said. “It worked for me.”
He closed the message by expressing confidence in the county’s future, citing upcoming economic development opportunities aimed at improving quality of life and supporting local businesses across Bexar County.
