SAN ANTONIO — With all the shootings we’ve seen recently, Bexar County is launching a public campaign this week on gun violence and safety called “Bexar Responsibly.”
“Bexar Responsibly,” spelled like the county, is just trying to cut down on all the gun violence we’ve seen lately and help educate people about gun safety.
There will be videos, flyers, and ads all over social media and on the county’s website with information about safe gun storage, how to talk to kids about gun safety, and there are some local gun owner statistics.
You’ll be able to download different information to pass out and spread the word.
This campaign is happening during National Gun Violence Awareness Month, but this campaign is really focused on deaths can be prevented.
Last month, a two-year-old was found at a home in northeast San Antonio, with a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office says the toddler likely found the weapon inside his parents’ room.
“What keeps a parent from locking up that gun,” said Monica Ramos, Bexar County Public Information Officer. “Is it because they don’t have access to a gun lock? Is it because maybe it’s too expensive or they don’t have time? So because of that, we’re coming up with different strategies to kind of address the issue all across the board.”
Bexar County is also working with a lot of different organizations to help spread the word on this campaign.
It’s planning to do more as well, possibly including workshops and classes in the fall.
