Bexar County Sheriff’s Office looking to hire federal employees affected by mass layoffs

Sheriff Javier Salazar said the federal employees make ideal candidates for several reasons.

SAN ANTONIO — Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar wants to hire federal employees who have been laid off or may be on the chopping block. The sheriff said they make ideal candidates for BCSO.

“Here you have these folks who I know are going through a living hell,” Salazar said. “There is a high level of uncertainty with these folks, that don’t know when that axe is coming.”

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Recruiting Team even made a flyer targeting federal employees.

The flyer reads: “Facing federal layoffs? The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office is hiring!”

“You certainly got the people with a willingness to serve the government,” Salazar said.

Sheriff Salazar said the federal employees make ideal candidates for several reasons.

“They’ve been through background check,” he said. “They’ve been through a recruitment process. They have been through testing, and on boarding. Each one of those people are easily thousands of dollars of tax payer investment.”

Since his own personal Facebook post calling for federal employees, he said he has heard from people locally and from our nation’s capital.

“We have had some people who work for the park service that are interested in transitioning over,” he said.

The sheriff said these are for uniform or civilian support positions.

“To me it is a no-brainer,” he said. “You’ve got people willing to serve. You’ve got people frustrated with this process over here, we are saying come over and give Bexar county a try.”

The sheriff said right now they have about 50 new patrol vacancies they want to fill. As for the detention side, he said they have made progress in filling those positions. But they’re looking to fill about 70 spots.
