Bexar County SWAT takes wanted man into custody after hourslong standoff, authorities say

Bexar County deputies arrested Manuel Sanchez after a six-hour standoff, using SWAT, gas, and tactical robots to resolve the situation safely.

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office took a man into custody after a nearly six-hour standoff Monday afternoon, officials say.

Earlier in the day, deputies with the Organized Crime Division began surveillance on the 500 block of south Hackberry Street on 59-year-old Manuel Sanchez, wanted on two felony warrants including possession of a firearm and theft of property.

According to BCSO, deputies saw a man peek outside the home before quickly ducking back inside.

BCSO then confirmed it was Sanchez and called multiple units to the area including SWAT and trained negotiators. Deputies tried to communicate with Sanchez and had assistance from tactical robots and drones.

Officials say SWAT then deployed gas inside the home in order to get Sanchez to exit the residence. Deputies also told neighbors to go back into their homes to avoid the effects of the gas. SWAT eventually entered the home and while clearing the house they found multiple trap doors.

According to BCSO, a tactical robot was deployed underneath the house where a Dalmatian was found – leading authorities to believe the man was under the residence.

Officials say the man was located underneath the home and was taken into custody without further incident. No weapons were found on Sanchez and no major injuries were reported.

Authorities also located a stolen vehicle on the property and two other men. The men had exited the home peacefully and were initially detained before being released. They are not expected to face any charges.

Schools in the nearby area were notified of the situation. Traffic delays in the neighborhood are expected until BCSO clears the scene.
