Big changes coming to Bexar County’s flood warning system

A meeting will be held Tuesday morning to discuss plans for preventing problems associated with flooding.

SAN ANTONIO — Almost two months after the Beitel Creek flooding, in San Antonio, Bexar County, the City of San Antonio and the San Antonio River Authority are about to make some big changes.

Tuesday afternoon, they’re going to let us know how they’ll try to prevent something like that from happening again.

The plan is to update and enhance the region’s flood warning system. It’s called the Nextgen Flood Warning System.

They’ll also be talking about their plan to use technology, make infrastructure investments, and increase public awareness to make the region more flood aware.

This comes after more than one hundred people died a month ago in the Guadalupe River flooding, and 13 others died when Beitel Creek flooded in June, sweeping cars off the road. The city of San Antonio is still in the middle of their investigation in that flood.

Last month while on a tour of Beitel Creek with KENS 5, Commissioner Tommy Calvert told us that people who have been living in fear of rising water tell him they are willing to pay to be safer.

“I have asked them would you be for an increase in the flood control portion of your county tax and they say yes,” said Calvert. “We cannot forget this incident. I’m not. I will not let others forget.”

Commissioners Court is scheduled to meet starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday. San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones and City Manager Erik Walsh are also expected to be there.
