SAN ANTONIO — Blood donors will get a free pizza and commemorative swag at Big Lou’s Pizza this Saturday.
The iconic east-side restaurant is celebrating World Blood Donor Day on June 14, in honor of the business’s founder, ‘Pops’ Lujan.
His granddaughter, Samantha, is hosting a blood drive on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the restaurant, located at 2048 S. W.W. White Road.
Anybody who donates at Big Lou’s Pizza on June 14, will get a 20-inch one topping pizza, a special Big Lou’s Pizza t-shirt and a Valero gas card.
‘Pops’ was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a rare blood disorder that prevents the body from making blood cells and platelets, which is vital to prevent infections. ‘Pops’ regularly needed blood transfusions – inspiring the family to host blood drives after his passing.
‘Pops’ was diagnosed with the serious disorder when Samantha was 4 years old; he passed away when she was 9.
“I’d give anything for a few moments with my grandpa,” Samantha said. “I hope each donation helps someone else have more time with their loved ones – every moment and donation counts.”
