SAN ANTONIO — On Wednesday, The Texas Parks and Wildlife Division announced they positively detected avian influenza A virus (H5N1) in vultures found in Landa Park in New Braunfels.
This specific strain has been identified in wild birds, commercial poultry, dairy cattle and various mammals.
Experts say that while there has been a widespread detection of avian influenza in wild birds across Texas, human-to-human transmission of the bird flu is extremely rare and the risk to the public is considered low.
Residents are advised to avoid contact with sick or dead birds and to report any unusual wildlife behavior to local authorities.
In addition, healthcare providers are advised to evaluate patients with influenza-like symptoms for recent exposure to potentially infected animals.
Any suspected cases should be reported to Comal County Public Health at 830-221-1150. Authorities say they will continue to monitor the situation.
