Witnesses captured video of an SUV towing a car backward on the Loop 610 eastbound lanes. What happened next astonished another witness.
HOUSTON — It’s a Houston traffic story that has gone viral. Witnesses captured video of a white SUV towing a car backwards on the 610 Loop near the Ella Boulevard exit on Monday afternoon.
KHOU 11 News is learning what happened after the bizarre towing job came to an end. A witness who was parked at a nearby office said he saw the vehicles stop on the 610 frontage road, where the chaos continued.
Houston police said the blue sedan had broken down, so the driver called his girlfriend to give him a tow.
But at some point, an axle broke, making the sedan impossible to control.
“It was like err err, like losing control, I heard when his tire blew out, just lots of swerving,” Ken Collins, a witness, told KHOU 11 News.
Witnesses from nearby office buildings captured the car swinging back and forth across the 610 Loop lanes. Collins said he watched the cars come to a stop on the feeder road. He said a woman was driving the white SUV and a man was in the blue sedan.
“It was crazy, I thought they was [about to] fight, I thought he was going to jump on the driver. He was yelling at the lady, he hit his hood,” Collins said.
He said the conflict continued.
“She was trying to talk to him, but he didn’t want to hear nothing of it. He was like, ‘you messed up my car, you [messed] up my car,'” He said.
After seeing the videos, Collins is concerned about what happened.
“I don’t know whose idea it was to pull the car from the back like that. Normally, on a chain you pull a car from the front but that’s my only thought. Why did they pull it from the back, especially on the freeway?” Collins said.
According to HPD, neither driver was given a citation for how they towed the car. However, the man in the blue car was arrested for an unrelated out-of-state warrant.
