Blue Christmas giveaway gifts turkey dinner to one thousand families

HOUSTON —
Area Law enforcement officers in collaboration with the Asian American Peace Officers Association joined forces Friday to pack 1,000 Christmas meals for families in need, making it a Blue Christmas for families.

This is the first year for the Blue Christmas turkey giveaway, and representatives say giving back to the community is just as much a part of their job as patrolling the streets. It takes dedicated teamwork and volunteers to get it all done.

Packing 1,000 turkey dinners is a big job, and more than 100 people helped get it done for the first-ever Blue Christmas food distribution.

“During the holidays while we’re getting things for our loved ones, I think people should think about those who may not have loved ones,” volunteer Zoha Momin said.

Momin and her family are standing beside Harris County deputies, Houston and Pasadena police officers to provide a vital service: a holiday meal.

“It is really nice to work with others, and make sure that people that may be left behind during these holidays gets something for their families,” Momin said.

The Asian American Peace Officers Association lead the charge, guiding turkeys by the truckloads to tables to be sorted and packed.

“It’s not possible for one person to do it, or just a few team members to do it,” Mike Nguyen said. “And having all this support coming out here to put it together, really helps us get it done.”

Nguyen is vice president of the AAPOA, and said it took a few social media posts to spread the word. Churches, schools and organizations came forward providing names for 1,000 families who’d benefit from this gift.

“I want them to know that besides law enforcement arresting bad guys and putting them in jail, this is the other aspect of law enforcement,” said Houston Police Department Lt. Dang Nguyen.

Once the dinners are packed, they’ll be delivered across Houston and Harris County. Supporters say they hoped to provide 500 meals. And that gift was doubled. It’s a Christmas wish that came true. So, there’s hope for the same or better next year.

“We started out big and we’re hoping to go bigger next year,” said Mike.

The AAPOA said 1,300 meals were provided to families this past Thanksgiving. So, helping this many families is a way to end the year on a high note.
