Body of 18-year-old man found at NISD elementary school, prompting police response

Officers responded to Glenoaks Elementary School just after 7 a.m. Thursday for reports of a body found.

SAN ANTONIO — Authorities say the body of an 18-year-old man with a self-inflicted gunshot wounded was discovered Thursday morning at Glenoaks Elementary School, in northwest San Antonio.

Law enforcement responded to the Northside ISD school near Babcock and Wurzbach just after 7 a.m. after receiving a report of a body found on the campus. The unidentified man was found near a portable building beside the playground.

They’re investigating it as a possible suicide. A San Antonio police sergeant at the scene said the unidentified man’s mother called earlier in the morning to report the absence of her son, saying her handgun was also missing.

The school continued operations, although movement inside the building was restricted. An NISD spokesperson said the ensuing investigation “is unrelated to students or staff at Glenoaks.”

The school’s principal, Laura Galindo, said in a message to families that “our campus was placed first into a brief lockdown and then into a secure status as a precautionary measure.”

“During the secure status, students were kept indoors and our daily schedule was kept as routine as possible,” Galindo wrote. “Our thoughts are with the family of the individual as they navigate this difficult time. And, while we do not believe any of our students or staff members to be connected in any way to the tragedy, we will be ready to provide any necessary support. I encourage you to reach out to our school counselor if your child needs any assistance.”
