Boerne defensive coordinator Brett Sawyer promoted to football program’s head coach

The team is coming off an 11-4 campaign that saw them ousted in the 5-A Div. II Semifinal.

SAN ANTONIO — Brett Sawyer will take the reins as the next football coach of the Boerne Greyhounds, taking over for Che Hendrix after he left for a position at the University of Arkansas.

The promotion was finalized by the Boerne ISD School Board on Monday evening, and also makes Sawyer the high school’s new athletic coordinator. Sawyer has been calling Boerne’s defensive schemes for the last seven years, a period in which the Greyhounds have amassed a 71-21 record, including double-digit wins over the last three seasons.

Sawyer takes over as the Greyhounds look to improve on a 5-A Div. II Semifinal loss to Randle in December, capping an 11-4 campaign.

“Coach Sawyer has been an integral part of Boerne’s success over the past seven years, helping shape a championship-caliber program,” Boerne ISD Athletic Director Stan Leech is quoted as saying in a release. “His leadership, experience as a head coach and deep connection to the Boerne community make him the ideal choice to continue the Greyhounds’ winning tradition.”

Sawyer previously occupied the role of head coach for the Sweeny High School Bulldogs, who made back-to-back regional semifinal game appearances in 2010 and 2011, the release says. He was more recently at the helm at Baytown Sterling from 2016 to 2018, a two-year stretch in which the Rangers went 10-10.

In all, he’s equipped with 25 years of teaching and coaching experience in Texas, Boerne ISD says. Sawyer’s four daughters all attend the district, and his wife teaches at Boerne High School.

The Greyhounds most recently made the state championship in 2022, where they lost 24-21 to China Spring. The team limited their opponents to 7 points or less in eight of 16 games that year.

Hendrix had been head coach for Boerne since the 2018-19 season.
