Boerne PD mourns K-9 tragically killed in line of duty

Police said K-9 “Chico” was killed after escaping from a patrol vehicle on Thursday and running toward the interstate where he was hit.

BOERNE, Texas — The Boerne Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its most loyal partners who was killed in the line of duty early Thursday morning.

Police said an officer initiating a traffic stop in the parking lot of a gas station at Johns Road and I-10 requested assistance from a Police K-9.

K-9 “Chico” arrived with his handler and conducted a sniff of the suspect, according to Boerne PD. Police said Chico gave a positive alert for narcotics and was secured back inside the patrol vehicle as the officers conducted a search.

According to police, as officers began to leave the scene, the door of the patrol vehicle unexpectedly opened when its locking mechanism did not properly latch.

That’s when Chico unfortunately exited the patrol vehicle and ran toward the interstate.

Police said officers began searching for the K-9 and a short time later, he was found near the interstate where he had been hit by a vehicle. Chico sadly succumbed to his injuries after he was located.

“We are heartbroken by this loss. K-9 Chico was a valued member of the department since November 2023,” Boerne Police Chief Steve Perez said. “He was a loyal and courageous partner who served our department and community with honor, pride and dedication.”

Police said community members are welcome to show support and leave cards or written messages in memory of the beloved K-9 at the Boerne PD lobby.
