Bowie has been loved, lost, and left behind — But he still believes | Forgotten Friends

After being returned twice and spending years wondering where he belongs, gentle, smiling Bowie is still waiting for the one family who won’t give up on him. 💔🐾

SAN ANTONIO — Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

Bowie doesn’t understand what he did wrong.

He sits quietly in his kennel, tail giving a hopeful thump whenever footsteps pass by, brown eyes searching for a face that might finally stop for him. He’s about 5½ years old now, no longer a puppy, but still young enough to dream of couch naps, backyard zoomies, and someone who calls him theirs.

Bowie first came to the Humane Society of New Braunfels as a stray. No collar. No name anyone knew. Just a sweet dog trying to figure out how he ended up alone.

He was adopted. Then returned.

Adopted again. Returned again.

This time, he’s been waiting 32 days.

Four years in a home came to an end, and Bowie found himself back where his journey started, confused, a little heavier around the middle, but still gentle, still trusting, still loving.

The Humane Society of New Braunfels says Bowie is the kind of dog who quietly steals your heart.

“This big, beautiful brown-and-white Hound mix is a gentle giant at just over 81 pounds and five years old,” shelter staff shared. “Bowie is friendly, kind-hearted, and loves getting out for long walks, happily taking in the world one sniff at a time. And yes, he’s known for flashing the sweetest smile for photos.”

Volunteers describe him as cooperative, playful, loving, and laid back. He enjoys pack walks, does well in dog playgroups, leans into every pet, and never turns down a treat.

“Bowie appears to enjoy the company of other dogs and seems like a good match for a home with kids ages ten and up,” said shelter staff. “He may be house-trained and already knows some basic commands, showing off his smart and cooperative side.”

They add that while Bowie can pull hard on the leash at first, he listens and responds well to gentle correction, especially with calm, consistent guidance.

“If you’re looking for a large, loving companion who’s ready to be your walking partner and loyal friend, Bowie would love to meet you,” staff said. “Come take him for a stroll and see if this smiling guy is the one for you.”

Bowie is healthy, vaccinated, neutered, and ready. Ready to stop packing his life into a kennel. Ready to stop wondering why goodbye keeps happening to him.

He doesn’t need fixing.

He needs someone who won’t give up.

If Bowie’s story tugs at your heart, now is the perfect time to meet him. The Humane Society of New Braunfels is hosting a waived adoption fee weekend on January 30 and 31, sponsored by New Braunfels ER & Hospital. Bowie’s adoption fee — normally $120 for medium and large dogs — will be completely waived.

To start the process, submit an application at HSNBA.org.

The shelter is also always in need of volunteers and donations to help dogs like Bowie get through the long days of waiting.

He’s already lost homes twice.

Bowie is hoping his next one is forever.
