“They were better basketball players,” said Wembanyama after the Spurs’ loss against the Bucks.
SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs lost 121-105 on the road against the Milwaukee Bucks as the Bucks built a 26-point lead. The Spurs are 0-1 against the Bucks this regular season.
Victor Wembanyama finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Harrison Barnes had 14, and Chris Paul had 18 and seven assists.
Devin Vassell recorded 11 points and nine rebounds, Keldon Johnson had 24 and 11 rebounds to lead the team, and Stephon Castle had five. Julian Champagnie added nine.
Head coach Gregg Popovich was also out due to illness, and Jeremy Sochan was out due to back issues. Assistant coach Mitch Johnson assumed head coaching duties for the game.
The Spurs are 18-19 this season, are on a three-game skid and will visit the Lakers on Saturday night.
Here’s a sample of what the teams said after the game.
Mitch Johnson:
“I thought their (Bucks) physicality got to us even early. Think we made a few shots just to kind of hang around in that first quarter. But our offense was slow, working catches in the spots we want to get catches. Our timing was off, and their physicality dictated a lot of that.”
“We’ve played good basketball. We’ve lost some games, and I understand that’s what people will look at and talk about. That’s where the mental toll comes in, and that’s why we have to stay together in that room tonight.”
Wembanyama:
“They (the Bucks) were better than us. They were better basketball players. We have to step up, and we have to respect that.”
“They took us seriously for sure.”
Doc Rivers:
