JASPER, Texas — A group of Buddhist monks walking across the U.S to promote peace have entered Deep East Texas.

Their 2,300-mile walk entered Jasper County from Hardin County on U.S. Hwy 69. The collection of about two dozen monks began their walk on Oct. 26 from Fort Worth to “raise awareness of peace, loving kindness, and compassion across America and the world,” according to the group, Walk for Peace.

The monks plan to travel through 10 states on their way to Washington D.C. So far, they have visited various Texas cities, including Austin and Houston. Their journey was temporarily interrupted when two of their members were struck in a crash on Hwy. 90 near Dayton. Both were hospitalized, with one undergoing surgery and the other sustaining minor injuries.

Sheriff Chuck Harvard has asked motorists along Hwy. 69 to reduce their speed and use caution while the monks make their trek through Jasper County. Their progress cane be tracked here.
