Bulldog and Mastiff mix named Buddy is so ugly, he’s cute | Forgotten Friends

When this laid-back dog isn’t out doing something, he can be found sleeping soundly in his kennel… snoring!

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

This week’s Forgotten Friend is Buddy, a five-year-old Bulldog and Mastiff mix that was first brought to the Humane Society in New Braunfels (HSNBA) by a good Samaritan back in October 2025 after being found as a stray.

Buddy gets along great with other dogs, and the shelter believes he would also get along with cats. He hasn’t actually met any cats yet, but he is super easygoing so they are sure he would get along with them.

“Buddy has been great with other dogs while in our care,” said shelter staff. “He has been a ‘Playgroup Superstar’ because he has done so well with dogs of all shapes, sizes, and temperament.”

The perfect family for Buddy would be one that likes a “so ugly he’s cute” dog who has a tendency to snore.

Buddy is laid-back, lazy and sweet.

“When he isn’t out doing something, he’s often asleep in his kennel and loves beds,” said shelter staff.

Buddy really likes treats and craves human interaction. He’s healthy, current on all of his vaccinations and has already been neutered.

“He has some ‘squishy face syndrome,’ but really, he is healthy,” said shelter staff.

Who wants to bring this adorable dog home for the holidays?

You can submit your application for Buddy right here: https://www.hsnba.org/adopt/adopt-a-dog/.

Since Buddy has been at HSNBA for over 30 days and is considered a “long-stay” dog, his adoption fee is waived for the right adopter this weekend. Fill out your adoption application now! In fact, because the shelter is at capacity, most of the dogs who have been at HSNBA for over 30 days currently have waived adoption fees.

Or visit the Humane Society of the New Braunfels Area located at 3353 Morningside Drive in New Braunfels, call them at (830) 629-5287 or email them at GeneralInfo@HSNBA.org.

The fees to adopt are $120 for large dogs, $200 for small dogs and puppies, $100 for kittens, $50 for adult cats. But remember, Buddy’s adoption fee is waived this weekend, to help him find his perfect home.

They are open:

  • Monday – Friday: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Saturdays: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Sundays and Holidays: Closed to the public

For whoever adopts Buddy, Lucy’s Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free “Glow Up” Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy’s most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!

On Thursday, December 4 HSNBA will be at Wassailfest, which is celebrating its 33rd anniversary in downtown New Braunfels, with spiced cider, festive lights, live music and a holiday atmosphere that turns historic streets into a winter wonderland.

Each year, our Executive Director and Board of Directors work hard to create a reasonable and practical budget for the following year. During the fall of 2024, we looked at the last 4 years of donations and made the conservative estimate that we would collect $575,000 in donations in 2025. However, to date, HSNBA has only collected just under $200,000 in monetary donations and we are quickly going into the RED.” says Sarah Hammond, the Executive Director at HSNBA.

Remember when you adopt a shelter pet, you save two lives… the one you bring home with you and the one that now will be saved because the shelter has more room.
