Butter’s BBQ repeats as one of Texas Monthly’s ’50 best BBQ Joints in Texas’

The Sinton stalwart debuted on the list, which is published every 4 years, in 2021.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — If you were in the mood for some Butter’s BBQ this weekend, don’t be surprised if you have some company in line.

What started as a tiny side-hustle on the corner of Texas 359 and E. San Patricio Avenue in Mathis has grown into one of the state’s premier BBQ destinations, with the Sinton stalwart being named one of Texas Monthly’s “The 50 Best BBQ Joints in Texas” for the second time.

The Coastal Bend has known about Butter’s BBQ since its opening in 2017, but a visit from the magazine raised the original Mathis location’s profile in 2018.

Now, the publication continues to champion South Texas’ not-so-hidden gem, giving Butter’s its first repeat appearance on the list after its debut in 2021. The list is published every four years.

It’s quite the feat for the small town of Sinton, where Butter’s BBQ now calls home.

Located at 713 E. Sinton Street, only blocks away from where the Welder Fire ripped through the town in March, pitmasters Andrew “Butter” Soto and Robert Rodriguez have continued to add to South Texas’ BBQ legacy.

“We’re honored and humbled to be included on such a highly regarded list, next to some of the world’s best cooks and pitmasters,” the business wrote on its Facebook page. “Thank you all for supporting us and making this amazing opportunity even possible.”

What makes Butter’s BBQ’s success even more impressive is that the restaurant is only open Friday-Sunday.

But according to the magazine’s profile, “this budding star of the smoky arts” makes the most of the time it has.

“Three days a week, flawlessly smoked USDA Prime brisket, near-perfect pork ribs, house-made 80:20 beef-pork sausage (the jalapeño-cheddar is among the best we’ve ever had), juicy smoked turkey, and occasional great big beef ribs abound,” it states.
