C.J. Stroud clears up shoulder concerns as Texans begin mandatory minicamp

Running back Nick Chubb worked with the team as a new Texan.

HOUSTON — Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud returned to throwing during the team’s first day of mandatory minicamp Tuesday, addressing speculation about his right shoulder that kept him sidelined during voluntary organized team activities (OTAs) this offseason.

Speaking to reporters, Stroud clarified that he did not have surgery and that his shoulder soreness stemmed from an intensive offseason training regimen focused on improving his physical conditioning.

“I’ve been working really hard on getting my body right, losing body fat, trying to be faster, stronger,” Stroud said. “And no, I went really well. But there’s always risk, reward, you know? So there’s always risk to working hard.”

The Texans organization maintained from the beginning that there was no concern regarding their starting quarterback, with Stroud back to slinging the ball during Tuesday’s practice session. The third-year quarterback acknowledged that his absence from throwing drills during OTAs became a major talking point for media covering the team during what he described as a relatively quiet offseason.

The team also welcomed veteran running back Nick Chubb to the field as he works his way back from multiple recent injuries. While the Texans are cautious, they’re allowing him to prove his fitness.

“We understand his history. But you know, we don’t dwell on that. We’re giving him opportunity. And we’ll see how it turns out for us here in Houston,” head coach DeMeco Ryans said. “One thing I can say from a guy who’s come back from injury is just about the work you put in.”

Tuesday’s mini camp session saw some notable absences, with running backs Joe Mixon, Damien Pierce and Woody Marks not participating. However, defensive end Danielle Hunter was present after missing the voluntary OTAs earlier this offseason.

The Texans will continue their mandatory minicamp as they prepare for the upcoming season. The first preseason game is August 9.
