Calico cat Abigail seeks a forever home after enduring two heartbreaking losses | Forgotten Friends

She lost her first owner when they died suddenly, then her next owner also passed away, leaving her without a home for the second time. 💙

BULVERDE, Texas — Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

This week’s Forgotten Friend is Abigail, a gorgeous Calico who ended up at the Bulverde Area Humane Society (BAHS) after suffering unbearable losses, not once… but twice.

After Abigail’s first owner passed away, she was taken in by Rainbow Bridges Sanctuary, who gave her a new home filled with love.

“Sadly, tragedy struck again when the sanctuary’s founder also passed away, and the property was lost,” said shelter staff. “For the second time in her life, sweet Abigail was left without a home.”

When the owner of Rainbow Bridges Sanctuary died, his children sold the property, causing the caretakers to have to rehome 90 cats. Abigail, an 8-year-old domestic shorthaired cat with a lovely Calico coat, was the sanctuary owner’s personal cat. She was brought to the BAHS on January 5.

“Abigail is a vision of elegance wrapped in a stunning Calico coat,” said shelter staff. “She has every wonderful kitty manner you could dream of—polite, affectionate, and full of quiet charm.”

Abigail is a gentle, well-mannered kitty that needs to remain indoors. She gets along really well with the other cats at the shelter, so she could join a multiple-cat household. Staff say she even does well near the shelter dogs, not showing any reaction.

She would thrive in a home with a quiet, structured environment with older kids, married couples or a senior couple.

“While Abigail seems to have a special fondness for men—perhaps in memory of her first beloved owner—she has been nothing but loving to all of us ladies at the shelter,” said shelter staff. “She’s a quiet companion who enjoys being near her people, offering comfort and warmth with her calm presence.”

Abigail loves Temptations Treats and will come running for them when offered. She adores being petted and even likes being talked to.

“She’s the perfect indoor kitty,” said shelter staff. “She’s gentle, well-mannered, and endlessly loyal.”

Abigail is healthy, current on all of her vaccinations, and has already been spayed. The only thing she really needs is you!

“Abigail has experienced more loss than any cat should, but she still believes in love—and she’s hoping her next home will be her forever one,” said shelter staff.

Are you the one? If you are interested in adding Abigail into your family, please email bahs.cats@gmail.com to set up a “Meet and Greet” with her.

“Come meet Abigail at the Bulverde Area Humane Society. She’s ready to be someone’s whole world—maybe yours.”

The fee to adopt Abigail would be $85, which covers the cost of his healthcare, all vaccinations, flea preventative and more.

Their adoption procedure starts with filling out an Adoption Contract, which can be downloaded here:

Your new friend will be ready for their new home after review by one of their Adoption Counselors.
All of their animals are spayed/neutered prior to adoption and have been tested for heartworm or feline leukemia / aids. They all have their age appropriate vaccinations. All puppies, dogs & kittens are microchipped.

If you’re considering adopting a pet who will join one already in your home, BAHS encourages “Meet and Greets.” Visiting dogs must be spayed or neutered and have proof of current vaccinations. Talk to a shelter staff member about scheduling your “Meet and Greet” session before coming out with your dog.

The shelter is located at 3563 Kingsnake in Bulverde and they are open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Their phone number is (830) 980-2247.

BAHS hosts a Reading to the Cats and Dogs event four times a year. The next one will be held on June 25. It’s an opportunity to grab your favorite book and come out to read to their animals from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m.

All ages are welcome and the pets love it! There is no sign up necessary, all you need to do is arrive the day of the event with a book and closed toe shoes. After you get there, meet with them for a quick orientation before going off to read aloud to the dogs and cats. It’s a great chance for kids to brush up on their reading skills while making the animals feel loved. Everyone benefits. Also great for older folks as well. Connect with animals while keeping your brain active.

They have a complete list of items in which they are always in need of right here. Right now they really need sunbeam heating pads that do not shut off for kitten season, Royal Canin Mother & Baby Cat dry food, Fancy Feast chicken, turkey, or beef pate. Not kitten formula of Fancy Feast, adult formula only, please.

You can follow Bulverde Area Humane Society on Facebook and Instagram.

Remember when you adopt a shelter pet, you save two lives… the one you bring home with you and the one that now will be saved because the shelter has more room.
