Camp Mystic counselor Katherine Ferruzzo confirmed dead in Texas Hill Country floods, family says

The body of Katherine Ferruzzo, a recent graduate of Memorial High School, was recovered Friday, according to a statement from her family.

HOUSTON — A counselor at Camp Mystic with Houston ties died in the July 4th flood in the Texas Hill Country, her family confirmed.

The body of Katherine Ferruzzo, a recent graduate of Memorial High School, was recovered Friday, according to a statement from her family.

“We are incredibly grateful to all the search and rescue professionals and volunteers who have remained steadfast in their efforts to locate the victims of this tragedy. We would especially like to thank the Texas Rangers,” the family said.

Ferruzzo had been accepted to the University of Texas at Austin for the fall semester and planned to become a Special Education teacher.

Her family plans to establish the Katherine Ferruzzo Legacy Foundation to honor her “compassion for those with special needs and learning differences.”

“On Friday, July 11, 2025, Katherine Ferruzzo’s remains were found. We are incredibly grateful to all the search and rescue professionals and volunteers who have remained steadfast in their efforts to locate the victims of this tragedy. We would especially like to thank the Texas Rangers.

Katherine, a recent graduate of Memorial High School, had been accepted to The University of Texas at Austin this fall and planned to become a Special Education teacher.

The Katherine Ferruzzo Legacy Foundation is being established to honor Katherine and her compassion for those with special needs and learning differences. We will share a link with donation details in the coming days.

We would like to thank the Houston and Camp Mystic communities for their unwavering support and for allowing us to mourn this tragedy in private. We are heartbroken for the other families and pray for all who have been affected.”

More than 2 dozen campers, counselors from Camp Mystic killed in flood

On Monday, Camp Mystic said at least 27 campers and counselors were among the people killed in the devastating flooding in Central Texas. 

That number continued to grow each day as searchers found more remains, but a few girls from the Christian summer camp remained missing. 

By Friday, the total death toll in the flooding was at least 120 people with 170 unaccounted for. 

Many of the victims were from the Houston area.
