HOUSTON — When the Astros were trying to get Alex Bregman back in Houston, several ideas were floated. One of them was to move future Hall-of-Famer Jose Altuve out to left field.
Well, as we all know now, Bregman did not end up back in Houston. He landed in Boston, but apparently the idea of Altuve in left field stuck. On his first day at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches for Spring Training, Altuve was working out with the outfielders.
The idea of Altuve moving from second base was first floated after the Astros picked up Isaac Paredes in the Kyle Tucker trade. Paredes came to Houston to play third base, but when there was a glimmer of hope for Bregman’s return to Houston, Altuve reportedly had the idea to move to left field so that Paredes could play second and Bregman could come back to Houston to take his normal spot at the hot corner.
“In the beginning, it was for Breggy and then just keep the plan, I guess,” Altuve said Monday. “I’m trying not to make this a big deal or a focus.”
As for his preference – second base or left field?
