Canyon Lake residents embrace rain’s slight relief amid drought woes

Canyon Lake finally saw a rise in the level of the lake, but it still needs a lot more.

SAN ANTONIO — Lake levels have been dropping across south Texas for months but our recent days of downpours has helped Canyon Lake’s level – even if just a little.

Boat ramp number one at Canyon Lake is on the south side of the lake – that area got about three inches of rainfall in the past five days, bringing the lake up about three feet.

KENS 5 spoke with some people who say any little bit helps.

“I am just taking it easy. And when it’s nice and cool, I’m not burning up,” said Jerry Langford who lives on Canyon Lake.

On Friday, Langford was seen perched high above the water. He says he’s glad the area got beneficial rain, but knows we need a lot more.

“It can get a 16-inch rain between Kerrville and Fredericksburg and it’ll come up eight feet. I’ve seen it do that,” he said.

The ramp and dock KENS 5 stopped by is usually floating in the water but Friday it wasn’t. Even with the rain, there was more exposed shoreline, another dangerous element for boaters.

“These trees over here. Those are normally 20 feet underwater. You can run into a rock or you can hit all kinds of stuff with motors,” Langford said.

“Right now, you know, we’re making the best out of a bad situation. The lake being low,” said Alton Akin who moved to Canyon Lake from Victoria with his family.

Akin says Canyon Lake is a great town even without a fully filled lake. There are plenty of shops in town including the Pink Elephant Retail Resale shop where he works, and there’s still plenty to do at the lake too.

“We have more shoreline to actually, you know, to go swimming to fish. Now since there’s less water, the fish don’t have that many places to go, so it’s a lot easier to fish the lake,” Akin said.

So, even though there’s not as much boating at Canyon Lake, there’s still plenty to do, and not just in the lake but also in town.
