Case dismissed just before capital murder trial for SA man accused in double homicide

The trial of Juan Antonio Reyes was set to begin this week until doubt cast by witness testimony led to the decision to dismiss the case.

SAN ANTONIO — A capital murder trial set to begin this week has ended with the case being dismissed.

The man at the center of the dismissed case is Juan Antonio Reyes, accused of shooting and killing Sergio Soto and Rachel Martinez on July 7, 2022 and setting their home on fire.

Arrest records show Soto and Martinez were shot in the head and the fire was set in an attempt to cover up the crime.

In a statement, the District Attorney’s Office said they knew the case was going to be difficult to prove but were prepared to take it to trial.

Recently, one of their witnesses made statements that cast doubt on their testimony. They say without the testimony, the state is unable to prove the identity of the defendants beyond a reasonable doubt.
