Cat tests positive for rabies in New Braunfels, officials say

The cat was picked up this week on the 200 block of Cross River Street.

SAN ANTONIO — A cat found in a New Braunfels neighborhood has tested positive for rabies, according to a press release Wednesday morning.

City of New Braunfels Animal Welfare employees responded to reports that a cat was attacking other cats in the area and was acting strange. The cat was picked up this week on the 200 block of Cross River Street.

According to Comal County officials, testing confirmed that the cat has rabies, which is a deadly viral disease that affects the nervous system of mammals.

As a precaution, the City of New Braunfels is implementing a temporary 4-week suspension of the Trap, Neuter, Release (TNR) program for feral cats within a one mile radius of the location where the infected cat was found.

If there are no further positive rabies cases in the area during that time, then the TNR program will resume.

Local health officials remind the public to be cautious with unfamiliar animals like foxes, racoons, bats, skunks, and stray dogs or cats.

If you observe any strange behavior from cat or other animals, do not approach the animal and contact the local animal welfare agency. In New Braunfels the number to call is 830-608-2183 and for Comal County, call 830-608-2016
