Catholic Charities Launches ‘40 Cans for Lent’ food drive in San Antonio

The annual campaign began Thursday with a community rally as it aims to collect 125,000 pounds of food to fight hunger in Bexar County.

SAN ANTONIO — A long-running Lenten tradition aimed at fighting hunger in the community is underway once again.

Catholic Charities officially kicked off its “40 Cans for Lent” and “40 Days of Service” initiatives Thursday, marking the start of a campaign that began 16 years ago and continues to grow each year.

The launch event was held at the Guadalupe Community Center, where more than 500 people gathered to begin the Lenten season with a focus on service and giving. More than 20 schools, community partners and volunteer groups gathered to support the effort.

Organizers say the mission remains the same: to put faith into action by helping families facing food insecurity.

“In Bexar County, one in five children don’t know where their next meal is coming from,” said Ada Saenz, president and CEO of Catholic Charities. “They have food insecurities that are real, and that is scary. This shouldn’t be the case. This is our community, about 20 Catholic schools coming together to make a difference, to make an impact.”

Students attending the kickoff heard from several speakers, including Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, and KENS 5’s Henry Ramos served as event emcee.

This year’s goal is to collect 125,000 pounds of food to help stock local food pantries and support families in need. Community members who want to contribute can find more information about donation opportunities and volunteer efforts here.
