SAN ANTONIO — One man is in custody and another remains on the run after officers caught two masked suspects breaking into mailboxes on the north side early Saturday morning, according to San Antonio Police.
The incident happened around midnight on Nov. 22 near the 1400 block of Patricia Drive, near West Avenue. Investigators say officers were called after reports of two masked individuals tampering with mailboxes.
When officers arrived, they spotted the two men walking out of the mailbox area. One suspect, identified as 39-year-old Orlando Castro, was detained without incident, while the second suspect ran from the scene and was not found.
Police say Castro was carrying a bag filled with mail that did not belong to him. According to investigators, he told officers he was stealing mail in hopes of finding credit cards.
Authorities now believe roughly 100 mailboxes were damaged, and about 80 victims were impacted in the theft.
Castro was arrested and has already bonded out of jail on a $30,000 bond.
The case remains an active and ongoing investigation as police continue searching for the second suspect.
