No one was hurt but shoppers were shocked when they came across a heavy police presence outside the grocery store Monday.
SAN ANTONIO — Monday night, shoppers outside a H-E-B were met with a chaotic scene as police were attempting to take a suspect into custody.
The incident was caught on camera by a shopper. It happened at the Las Palmas location off Castroville Road around 8 p.m.
San Antonio Police said the suspect, Kaveon Quashaun Westley, evaded police earlier after a traffic stop. Investigators pulled over Westley around 5 p.m. at the intersection of Hazel and South San Jacinto for driving erratically and having a license plate that did not match the vehicle.
Investigators said when they were talking with Westley, he put the car into drive and sped off. Police eventually caught up with him outside the H-E-B.
Turns out, Westley had an active felony warrant for evading police with a vehicle back in 2023. People who shop at H-E-B told us it was an unsettling scene.
“It’s kind of scary,” one shopper said. “Especially when you have kids around here.”
Just days before this incident, on Friday, there was a reported shooting near the same H-E-B. A man shared a photo on Facebook of shoppers gathered in the back of the store as a result of the incident.
However, SAPD has not provided information regarding what exactly took place.
Shoppers told us they are relieved that no one was hurt in Monday’s incident. Westly was seen on the video surrendering peacefully.
“I’m very thankful, thank God that nothing escalated,” one shopper said.
H-E-B did decline to comment on both incidents since they did not originate inside their store or involve any customers.
Westley remains in jail with a $20,000 bond.
