Caught on camera: Selma police search for man who allegedly stole cash from a church

The man caught on camera allegedly stole $500 dollars in cash from the safe and caused nearly $700 dollars in damages.

SELMA, Texas — Selma police are searching for the man seen on camera breaking into a church and taking off with cash.

Around 1 a.m. on April 10, surveillance video shows a man walking right into the kitchen of the school attached to the River City Community Church, taking a look around, looking through refrigerators and leaving.

About fifteen minutes later, he comes back. Video shows him heading straight back to where a safe was kept.

“You know, you got to look pretty hard in a kitchen to find something to steal,” said Willy Mayfield, associate pastor for the church. “They didn’t take food. They even looked… They did find the money and took it.”

The man caught on camera allegedly stole $500 dollars in cash from the safe and caused nearly $700 dollars in damages.

“$500 is not a small amount but it doesn’t go very far these days with the cost of, of groceries,” Mayfield said. “So it’s not a small amount but it’s not a huge amount either.”

Mayfield describes the incident as “unfortunate,” given the fact that the church has programs to help those in need.

“We have a lot of resources on our campus,” he explained. “We have a food distribution, we have vocational training, that we help people in need and if a person really needs help. There’s much better ways to get help than to steal from people because if you get caught stealing, obviously you’re gonna you’re going to pay for that crime. But there’s a lot of resources here on our campus that we can use to help people better their lives rather than stealing to better their lives.”

Anyone with information on the identity of this suspect should contact Detective James Graham with the Selma Police Department at 210-651-7871, referencing case 25-08145.
