Caught on camera: Video shows man shot at SA convenience store after gun inside backpack goes off

Police said a 31-year-old male victim sustained a gunshot wound to his upper left arm when another man dropped his backpack that reportedly had a gun inside.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Police said a man was shot after a gun inside of a backpack went off at an east-side Stop and Shop store.

Police said officers responded to a shooting in progress on the 800 block of North New Braunfels Avenue on Sunday afternoon.

An SAPD spokesperson said the 31-year-old victim sustained a gunshot wound to his upper left arm when another man dropped his backpack that reportedly had a gun inside. The gun then went off, striking the victim and injuring him.

The suspect then took off running but officers did detain a man shortly after who matched the description of the suspect but turned out not to be him.

KENS 5 spoke with the cashier who witnessed the shooting Sunday. He chose to remain anonymous but said everyone was confused at first.

“I heard a pop, something pop, nothing loud really you know, so I looked around really quick to see if somebody busted a bottle or so,” the cashier said.

He quickly realized a customer had been shot. He said the suspect and victim did not know each other.

“I never seen something like this,” the cashier said.

The owner of the shop shared surveillance video with KENS 5 of the incident where you see the suspect walk out moments after the gun went off. The cashier said another customer tried to chase down the suspect but he got away.

“What is the chance?,” the cashier said. “For the gun to fall down and bullet to hit somebody among seven people.”

Police say this is an ongoing investigation and as of Monday night are still searching for the suspect.

The victim was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) in stable condition.
