U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than $2.6 million worth of suspected methamphetamine hidden inside a shipment of carrots at the Pharr International Bridge.
According to CBP, the discovery was made March 30 at the cargo facility when officers inspected a commercial tractor trailer arriving from Reynosa, Mexico.
The shipment was flagged for further inspection using nonintrusive technology and a canine unit.
During a physical search, officers found more than 1,000 packages of suspected methamphetamine concealed within the carrot shipment.
Authorities say the drugs weighed nearly 300 pounds and have an estimated street value of about $2.6 million.
“The criminal element is always thinking of ways to get their narcotics through our international crossings, but our officers are trained to detect and stop these attempts,” said Carlos Rodriguez.
CBP officers seized both the narcotics and the vehicle.
Homeland Security Investigations has launched a criminal investigation.
