CBP seizes $8.1 million in meth hidden in tile shipment at Pharr bridge

Officers discovered more than 900 pounds of suspected methamphetamine during a cargo inspection.

Federal officers made a massive drug bust at a South Texas port of entry, uncovering millions of dollars worth of methamphetamine hidden in a commercial shipment.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the seizure happened April 21 at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility.

Officials say a tractor trailer arriving from Reynosa, Mexico was flagged for a secondary inspection. Using nonintrusive imaging equipment and a canine team, officers discovered suspicious packages concealed inside pallets of tile.

A closer inspection revealed 200 packages of white powder that tested positive for methamphetamine.

In total, authorities seized about 908 pounds of the drug, with an estimated street value of more than $8.1 million.

CBP also seized the tractor trailer, and Homeland Security Investigations has launched a criminal investigation.

Officials say the bust highlights ongoing efforts to stop illegal narcotics from entering the country.
