The local animal celebrity was so popular, the Caldwell Mayor named Sept. 21 “Clyde the Camel Day.”
CALDWELL, Idaho — If you’ve lived in Idaho, even for a little while, and taken some drives around the valley, you may have come across Clyde the Camel.
Driving down the rural road, seeing a camel out of nowhere was kind of exciting. He seemed to always be standing by the road, appearing like he was watching the passers-by just as much as they were watching him. Not only was Clyde a people watcher, he was also a people person. He got out-and-about, even appearing on KTVB smooching Maggie O’Mara, and the Today Show on NBC.
Unfortunately, Clyde passed away in early August of 2024. He had been a part of the community, whether touring around, or just relaxing at home, for 24 years.
However, as with any loss, there is also a recognition of worth. There was a celebration of life for Clyde on Sept. 21 in Nampa at the Karcher Nazerene Church. People came from all over the state to remember Clyde and the impact he had on them.
The Caldwell Mayor, Jarom Wagoner, even proclaimed September 21 “Clyde the Camel Day.”
