Center Point couple says 3 feet of flood water got inside their home

CENTER POINT, Texas — A Center Point couple is getting help from the community after scrambling to save everything they could with the deadly floods.

Mary and Wilbur Vance own a home right beside the Center Point Volunteer Fire Department, which had to be cleaned inside out for first responders to continue operations after the deadly Fourth of July floods.

They tell me 3 feet of water got inside the home. The couple ran to higher ground, but they had a panic trying to save all their animals.

They had three chickens, 10 rabbits, a dog, a cat, and a guinea pig on their property.

Wilbur says the water started reaching their garage at 7 a.m. And soon was in waist-deep water trying to save the chickens. Vance lost his truck in the flood, but with the help from a center point firefighter, they loaded every pet they could in Mary’s car to move to a safe area.

“Throwing stuff in the car, the rabbit, the cat, chickens outside,” said Mary Vance, flood survivor. “We jumped in by 8:00 a.m. The water all the way to the front, which was higher, was up to the bottom of my door. We’re like, almost crying, leaving because we’re like, what if we just had they’re going to drown.”

“This is the fourth one, 1930, 1978, 87 and 2025,” said Wilbur Vance. “And each time the cost of life is higher. So, this is one of those bad ones.”

Now Wilbur and Mary say they only lost one rabbit and their guinea pig, but they still don’t have a home.

Thankfully, center point has been sticking together to give the Vance’s temporary houses as volunteers repair their home free of charge.

Mary Vance says it can take up to six months for them to move back to their home.

They’re thankful for the community for the love and support and all their pets still with them.
