Central Texas man finds WWII bomb in attic while remodeling

Fort Cavazos Explosive Ordnance Disposal said the bomb contained “explosive residue” and will be destroyed out of caution.

MCLENNAN COUNTY, Texas — A McLennan County man made a unique discovery while remodeling an attic in a home this January, an explosive from World War II!

The man shared in the Facebook group What’s Up WACO on Jan. 30 showing off the device.

The McLennan County Sheriff’s Office told 6 News their bomb squad tested the device that morning, stating it was from the “ww2 era” and that the bombs were usually kept as souvenirs.

Soldiers assigned to the Fort Cavazos 79th Ordnance Battalion (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) also responded to the scene at the request of the Sheriff’s Office, Fort Cavazos told 6 News.

Fort Cavazos identified the bomb as a WWII era 40mm Japanese bomblet, and said it still contained “explosive residue”. Out of caution, Fort Cavazos said the bomb would be taken back to post and destroyed by controlled demolition.

Additionally, Fort Cavazos reminded Central Texans of the 3 “R”s of explosives safety: Recognize, Retreat and Report. More information on explosives safety can be found at this link.
