Centro San Antonio reveals Houston Street Garage Spurs mural concept

The mural is aimed to reflect the city’s love of the Silver and Black.

SAN ANTONIO — The city of San Antonio and Spurs murals go hand-in-hand.

From murals of Victor Wembanyama, Gregg Popovich, Keldon Johnson to Tim Duncan and many others, murals reflecting the NBA team dot the entire city.

And there will be a new addition coming soon to downtown.

Centro San Antonio announced in a release that the next phase of the Houston Street Garage Spurs Mural has moved forward with concept and design approval by the Department of Arts & Culture’s Public Art Committee, now heading for approval through the San Antonio Arts Commission.

According to Centro San Antonio, per the City of San Antonio’s Public Art Ordinance, the design for any artwork on city property, such as the wall on Houston Street Garage, must be reviewed and approved by the Department of Arts & Culture’s Public Art Committee and the San Antonio Arts Commission. Once approved by both, the production of the artwork can begin.

“Public art is truly for all and often commemorates our community’s achievements, athletics included, and our culture,” said Stacey Norton, Administrator for the City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture in a release. “This project is an example of many wonderful things coming together such as the intersection of arts and sports, a San Antonio artist’s work being displayed prominently for all to enjoy, our partnership with Centro San Antonio to expand the vibrancy of downtown, and most of all, the community’s passion for the Spurs.”

The concept reflects the city’s Mexican roots coupled with the Spurs.

It depicts a Spurs jersey with “Por Vida” (For Life) across the top. There is a golden basketball as well as a Spurs championship ring and the franchise’s year of entering the NBA in 1973.

The mural takes the form of a “vela” (a Mexican candle) and is measured to be standing at nearly 75 feet tall.

Originating from many of the artist’s own lived experiences, “the proposed project has inspired a reflection in memory and demonstrates the relevance of the SPURS,” said Andy Benavides, the artist behind the proposed ‘Por Vida’ mural for the Houston Street Garage in a release. “It reflects not only my family history but numerous family histories and the loyalty of so many that consider the SPURS their family.”

The project is anticipated to begin production on November 6 and will end on December 1.

But you do not have to wait until the completion of this mural.
