The Chambers County Sheriff’s Marine Unit clears abandoned crab traps from Galveston Bay, improving safety and protecting wildlife in a vital community effort.
CHAMBERS COUNTY, Texas — The Chambers County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit partnered once again in the annual Abandoned Crab Trap Removal Program hosted by the Galveston Bay Foundation, helping clear hazards from local waterways.
Sheriff Brian Hawthorne said the agency’s Marine Unit and CCSO Explorers used office airboats to remove abandoned crab traps from Galveston Bay and Trinity Bay.
Abandoned traps, often referred to as “ghost traps,” can continue catching fish and other marine life long after they are discarded. Officials said the traps also pose navigation hazards for boaters.
The annual cleanup effort is aimed at protecting wildlife and improving safety on the water. Hawthorne thanked the CCSO Explorers for their work and highlighted the importance of the partnership with the Galveston Bay Foundation.
The sheriff said the office is proud to protect not only the residents of Chambers County but also the natural resources that define the coastal community.
