Chicano playwright to host reading of latest play in San Antonio ahead of production

After the reading, the audience will have the opportunity to talk with Rodney Garza.

SAN ANTONIO — A Texas-raised actor, director and playwright will be reading part of his latest play on the west side of San Antonio this weekend. 

Rodney Garza known for will have a reading of his new play “El Pazchuco for Prez” on Saturday, May 31. at the Guadalupe Latino Bookstore, located at 1300 Guadalupe Street at 3p.m. This event comes months ahead of the full production of “El Pazchuco for Prez” set for September 2025. 

The reading is free to the public but seating is limited. 

“El Pazchuco for Prez” is described as a satirical take on the American electoral system. In the play, El Pazchuco, a zoot-suited lecturer who is tired of the underbelly of politics decides to shake things up by throwing his Tando (Zooter hat) into the political arena.   

After the reading, the audience will have the opportunity to talk with Garza and a reception honoring the playwright will follow. 

“We are so honored to work with long-time Chicano performance artist Rodney Garza, “said Jorge Piña, director of the Theater Arts Program. “Rodney is no stranger to the Guadalupe stage, he recently directed Petra’s Pecado to sold out houses back in December of 2024.” 

Garza currently resides in Moreno Valley, California and was most recently seen as Viejo Antonio in the touring version of “Crystal City 1969.” 

The playwright was the original director of “Petra’s Pecado” when it premiered at the Guadalupe Theater in 1995 to a sold out crowd. Some of Garza’s other productions include “Zoot Suit,” “I am Joaquin,” “School of the Americas,” and many others. He was also a cast member for the El Teatro Campesino’s 25th Anniversary Tour of “Zoot Suit.”
