MARSHALL, Texas — A child was arrested Thursday in Marshall for an armed robbery that began as a meetup for shoes listed on Facebook Marketplace.
Marshall police say a driver was stopped in middle of the roadway in the 1500 block of W. Grand Ave. around 10 a.m. The woman said she had just been robbed at gunpoint in a store parking lot while she was meeting someone she thought was interested in the shoes she was selling on Facebook Marketplace.
After giving a photo of the suspect, officers began the search. The suspect was arrested at a nearby apartment complex following an investigation and transported to the Willoughby Detention Center, police said.
Officers found the shoes and the firearm believed to have been used in the robbery as well as stolen items, including multiple identification cards and credit/debit cards related to multiple recent car burglaries, according to police.
“The quick arrests in this case are the direct result of great teamwork by our officers, investigators, and our partners at the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office,” said Marshall Police Chief Cliff Carruth. “This is an example of how fast, coordinated police work can take dangerous individuals off the streets and help keep our community safe.”
During their investigation, officers found a man who ran away from them as well. Anthony Culberson, 25, of Marshall, was charged with evading arrest. He is not connected to the robbery, but he is related to an ongoing criminal investigation.
Police urged people to be cautious when meeting for online transactions and to meet in public, well-lit areas like the MPD’s designated Safe Exchange Zone.
