Child dies after sledding accident, water rescue in North Carolina

Deputies said two first responders and three people who helped with the rescue were taken to the hospital.

WHITSETT, N.C. — UPDATE: All five people taken to the hospital were released, according to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office.

A child is dead after an incident while sledding led to a water rescue operation in Whitsett on Saturday.

Guilford County EMS confirmed the call came in around 9:12 a.m.

A neighbor told WFMY News 2 that a grandmother and mother were with two children who were sledding when one of the children slid down a hill and went into the water at Stoney Creek Golf Club.

Rescue crews took the child to a hospital. The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office said the child died from injuries sustained in the incident.

Deputies said two first responders and three people who helped with the rescue were taken to the hospital.

GCSO confirmed they and the Whitsett Fire Department, McLeansville Fire Department, Greensboro Fire Department, Guilford County Fire Department, and Guilford County Emergency Services all responded to the incident.

Samantha Dunnington, the wife of one of the first responders who was taken to the hospital, told WFMY News 2 that he was treated for frostbite and lacerations to his hand after breaking through the ice. Both he and another firefighter had hypothermia but have since been released from the hospital.

The investigation is still ongoing.
