A beloved retired K9 who helped take drugs off the streets and connect with kids has died after short battle with cancer.
FLORESVILLE, Texas — A South Texas community is mourning the loss of a four-legged officer who spent years protecting it.
Retired K9 Gerben died Tuesday after a battle with cancer, according to the 81st Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
Over the past eight years, Gerben served with both the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office and the district attorney’s office, where officials say he helped take dangerous drugs off the streets and keep neighborhoods safe.
But his impact went beyond law enforcement.
Leaders say Gerben also connected with young people through school visits, encouraging them to stay away from drugs and inspiring some to pursue careers in law enforcement.
“Our office is heartbroken. We have lost one of our own,” District Attorney Audrey Gossett Louis said.
Those who knew him say Gerben’s personality was just as unforgettable as his work.
“Chuck Norris needed a dog, and K9 Gerben answered the call,” a veterinary technician said.
For his handler, the loss is deeply personal.
“I spent more time with Gerben than I spent with anyone over the last eight years,” said Investigator Daniel Kaufman with the 81st Judicial District Attorney’s Office. “He wasn’t just a dog; he was my partner, best friend and protector.”
Kaufman said Gerben left a lasting impression on countless people.
“People didn’t remember my name, but they knew Gerben’s name,” he said, thanking Chaparral Veterinary Clinic in Jourdanton for the care they provided throughout Gerben’s life.
Gerben was the first K9 to serve the district attorney’s office, leaving behind a legacy of service, loyalty and heart.
After years of protecting others, officials say Gerben is now at peace — and will always be part of the family.
