SAN ANTONIO — A long-planned project to expand veterinary services at San Antonio Animal Care Services (ACS) is moving forward, with city leaders set to receive a key update Wednesday morning.
The proposal calls for construction of a new ACS veterinary hospital and renovations to the existing clinic — a project estimated at $15.3 million and funded through the 2022 bond program.
City officials say the new hospital is critically needed, noting that ACS currently lacks the capacity to properly treat the number of injured or treatable animals brought to the shelter. The expanded facility would also allow the department to perform spay and neuter surgeries on site, improving efficiency and animal care.
The city received seven proposals for the project and has narrowed the list down to one recommended vendor. While the City Council is not expected to award the contract on Wednesday, the audit committee will be briefed at 10 a.m. on how staff reached their recommendation.
The project is expected to go before the full council for consideration and approval later this month.
