City of San Antonio celebrating more affordable housing units on east side

SAN ANTONIO — The City of San Antonio is celebrating the opening of more affordable housing units on the east side Monday.

41 new houses are being added to a tiny home village at a cost of nearly $10M dollars. The homes will be to house some of the city’s homeless who are over 50 years old, including veterans and folks who are disabled.

The homes are at Towne Twin Village on Dietrich Road off of Loop 410. They join 83 homes that opened in 2023.

A transportation pavilion, chapel, and multi-purpose complex were created in phase one. This second phase is providing a community kitchen, laundry facilities, and gathering areas.

It’s part of the city’s first permanent supportive housing project that was approved in a 2022 bond.

“Our model is not to house somebody and then come check on them in a month or two months or three months to see how they’re doing in their home,” said Edward Gonzales, Executive Director of Housing First Community Coalition. “We are here to provide support as they’re transitioning out of homelessness and as they’re coming into their new residence.”

A committee selects the most vulnerable to live at Towne Twin Village. Volunteers live on the property to help anyone make ends meet.

The ribbon cutting ceremony will be held later Monday morning at 10:00 a.m.
