Clark softball matches historic playoff run, advances to regional semifinals

Clark softball matched the deepest playoff run in school history and now faces No. 6 East Central in the regional semifinals Thursday night.

SAN ANTONIO — The playoff run continues for Clark High School softball — and the Cougars are making history along the way.

Clark swept Hutto in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs, winning 16-13 and 6-5 to advance to the regional semifinals. The victory matches the 2012 Clark team for the longest playoff run in program history.

Now, the Cougars are preparing for another major challenge: a best-of-three regional semifinal series against East Central, the No. 6-ranked team in Texas according to MaxPreps. East Central also reached the UIL state semifinals last season.

Game one is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday behind the visitors stands at Gustafson Stadium.

Before the team headed out Thursday afternoon, supporters gathered for a spirited sendoff. Family members, classmates and fans lined the street holding handmade signs for each player and cheering as the team bus pulled away.

Clark softball has made only a handful of deep postseason runs in school history, with the 2012 team previously setting the standard for the program’s furthest advancement in the playoffs.

This year’s Cougars have leaned on explosive offense and resilience in tight games, combining for 22 runs in their sweep over Hutto.

The winner of the series will move one step closer to the UIL state tournament.
