CLEMSON, S.C. — Clemson Coach Dabo Swinney said on Sunday that he is aware of a player’s recent arrest ahead of the football season and that it would impact his ability to play in upcoming games.
In a statement provided to WLTX by Clemson Athletics, Swinney acknowledged reports of Ian Schieffelin’s arrest for a charge he described as “suspicion of DUI.”
“Clemson Athletics has a clear policy by which we will abide, so Ian will miss some competition to start this season as a consequence,” he said in the statement. “We’re obviously very disappointed by the situation, but we are very thankful no others were involved and no one was hurt.”
The 2024-2025 Clemson student athlete handbook states that a student-athlete arrested for or charged with DUI will be “withheld immediately from not less than the next 10% of their intercollegiate (championship segment) competitions.
It goes on to say the head coach must recommend a course of action within seven days to add further penalties as needed upon review by the athletic director.
