Colorado man dies after scuba diving lesson in Hawaii

Police said Greg Durocher, 51, of Castle Rock had been taking a scuba diving lesson with his family.

HAWAII, USA — Police in Hawaii are investigating the possible drowning of a man from Colorado.

The Hawaii Police Department said South Hilo patrol officers and Hawaii Fire Department personnel responded to Waiolena Beach Park just before 12:30 p.m. Monday for a report of a possible drowning.

Officers learned that Greg Durocher, 51, of Castle Rock had been taking scuba-diving lessons with his family. He was in the water for about 38 minutes before returning to shore and complained of having difficulty breathing, according to a release. Shortly after that, he became unresponsive.

The dive master and Durocher’s family performed CPR until they were met by paramedics from the Hawaii Fire Department.

Durocher later died at the hospital.

The coroner will determine the exact cause of Durocher’s death, police said. Foul play is not suspected.

Durocher was a former firefighter who worked for West Metro Fire Rescue for 13 years before leaving in 2011 to start his own business. He was the CEO of Safe Ride 4 Kids, an online retailer of child safety products.

“Everyone here who knew Greg is saddened to hear of his passing,” West Metro Fire said in a statement. “And our thoughts are with his family.”
