Comal County man known as ‘Naked Gary’ sentenced to 10 years after exposing himself to mother, child

Investigators said the woman was leaving for work with her toddler when the child pointed out the naked man, 43-year-old Gary Rutten II, on their property.

SAN ANTONIO — A 43-year-old Canyon Lake man is going to prison for 10 years after exposing himself to a child and mother.

Comal County authorities said Gary Rutten II was known as “Naked Gary” in the community.

Investigators said Rutten started to pop up nude in public before it escalated into him confronting women and touching himself and trespassing onto private property.

Records say on April 6, 2022, deputies were called to the 300 block of Canyon Springs Drive about reports of a nude man trespassing.

Investigators said the woman living there was leaving for work with her toddler when the child pointed out the naked man on their property. Rutten was reportedly standing just feet away staring at the duo and touching himself.

The woman screamed and told Rutten to leave. Rutten then ran off into the woods behind the home, according to investigators.

Shortly after, officials said a neighbor noticed a man driving off from the area.

The mother told deputies she noticed the man in the neighborhood but didn’t know his name.

After collecting video from neighbors in this time frame, deputies were able to identify Rutten as the naked man in the woman’s report.

Neighbors told investigators they got cameras installed because they had issues with Rutten exposing himself.

Deputies also identified Rutten as the man because records show he used the same car exposing himself to another woman at a nearby Dollar General.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison for Indecency with a child by exposure, a third-degree felony, which was enhanced to a second-degree punishment range due to a prior felony conviction.
